The construction for Montreal Road revitalization started in 2020. Two years later, the City of Ottawa significantly advanced the work along Montreal Road. The result plans to improve the street to a vibrant and welcoming main street, balancing a transportation network that allows residents and businesses to thrive.
Project highlights:
The Montreal Road construction project is extensive, including 2.1 kilometres in length spanning from Cummings Bridge to St. Laurent Boulevard. The $65M investment modernizes the underground water and sewer infrastructure, buries hydro poles, and brings in new transportation conditions (standard vehicular and bus lanes, cycling track, standard sidewalks, improved accessibility, and intersection efforts).
This year will be unique as it marks the last year for this significant City project. Please note the spring and fall milestones as work is set to restart on Sunday, April 24th, 2022.
Spring to mid summer
- Complete underground sewer and telecoms duct work from Lafontaine to St Laurent
- Complete underground work at Lafontaine/Montreal Road intersection
- Complete curbs and sidewalk from Lafontaine to St Laurent
- Complete traffic calming on North River Road
Mid-Summer to Fall
- Complete final lift of asphalt along Montreal Road from North River Road to St Laurent
- Complete concrete sidewalks and cycle track from Lafontaine to St Laurent
- Complete landscaping (trees, shrubs and plantings ) along Montreal Road from North River Road to St Laurent
- Remove Montreal Road detour
- Finish work at Emond, Bradley and Dupuis
Fall to winter 2022
- Complete streetscaping along Montreal Road from North River Road to St Laurent including bus shelters, recycling bins and bike racks
- Complete overhead Hydro and telecoms including hydro poles from Altha to L’Eglise
We can expect the route detours listed below as the work progresses:
Traffic impacts
- Montreal Road will be reduced to a single westbound lane from St. Laurent Boulevard to the Vanier Parkway until approximately mid-September 2022
- While Montreal Road is reduced to a single westbound lane, eastbound traffic will be detoured via North River Road and Vanier Parkway to McArthur Avenue and St. Laurent Boulevard.
- Most side streets will close temporarily, with access provided at key intersections (Olmstead, Marier, Lacasse and Cantin).
Transit impacts
- Montreal Road will have two-way traffic predominantly for buses for some segments of the street.
- A temporary detour of OC Transpo buses will be necessary to maintain bus services in the community.
