We have seen improvements to public spaces, active transportation and community engagement. Our community has felt the impacts, both big and small, of these efforts. Let’s carry on building this momentum and making sure that Lowertown, Sandy Hill and Vanier thrive and are welcoming neighbourhoods to live, work and play.

Lowertown

Complete revitalization of the tennis court at Bordeleau park

Rideau Street and William construction:

o Worked with various City teams to undertake the detailed design and construction of a Renewed Rideau Street, from Sussex Drive to Dalhousie Street and Wiliam Street from Rideau Street to George Street and Ogilvy Square Between Rideau Street and Besserer Street.

o New additions include a bidirectional active transportation facility, LED street lighting, bicycle parking, modern benches and waste receptacles, and green landscaping, including 15 trees. The transformation of William Street prioritizes the pedestrian experience.

Lowertown east traffic calming measures (Cobourg/Old St-Patrick/Beausoleil improvements):

o Worked with City staff to undertake a traffic study and developed a plan to implement traffic calming measures as part of the The Neighbourhood Traffic Calming Program

The measures implemented include:

New garbage and benches in BIA zone

o Worked with City staff and local businesses to introduce 89 new garbage and recyclable waste receptacle bins and seven benches in high-traffic areas of Lowertown, including Rideau Street and the Byward market. Worked with City staff and local businesses to add four benches along the Mackenzie Bridge.

o Worked with City staff and local businesses to add four benches along the Mackenzie Bridge

Worked with City Staff, artists, and community members to add public art in the following location(s):

o 40 Cobourg (Le Patro)

Worked to facilitate OCH improvements at:

o 312 Cumberland: Flooring, Elevator, Enhanced security measures, lighting 

o 181 Bruyere: Elevator, modernized community room, community garden, flooring, laundry room upgrades 

o 380 Murray: new flooring

o Beausejour/Beausoleil Community: street renaming, landscaping, balcony, brickworks 

o MacManor: Lobby upgrades and flooring, enhanced safety measures 

o 160 Charlotte: Elevators, flooring 

o 595 Rideau: Flooring, lighting and lobby 

o 215 Wurtemburg: Waste management improvements, flooring 

Added the bidirectional bike lane on Mackenzie Ave 
Led the ByWard Market renewal plan, including infrastructure improvements (public realm study to beautify our public spaces) and governance (new non-for-profit organization, Ottawa Markets, to manage the outdoor vending in the ByWard Market)
Led the Minto Bridges Revitalization project to preserve our heritage
Introduced pedestrian safety measures at the Union St roundabout
Funding approved for the Lowertown East Traffic Management Infrastructure measures
Introduced cycle zone delineators on Sussex Ave for cycling safety
Road resurfacing for sections of Dalhousie St, St-Patrick St and King Edward Ave
Introduced new patio regulations to ensure safe access and protect sidewalk space for pedestrian use
Ensuring a cleaner public space in ByWard Market by dedicating City staff
Supporting the Lowertown our Home, a community leader’s network
City lead to ensure investments for the new La Nouvelle Scène
Addition of a public art fence at Bingham Park
Addition of an outdoor basketball court at King Edward Ave
Supported the addition of a community garden in front of Patro d’Ottawa
Introducing winter parking ban options at Jules Morin Park parking lot
Renewing residential building by rehabilitating the exterior at 380 Murray St and completing significant landscaping improvements
Addition of a new community garden at Bélanger Manor seniors’ residence
Traffic calming measures (i.e. flex stakes) on Dalhousie Street, Bolton Street, Beausoleil Dr and Old St-Patrick Street
Painted bulb out and painted parking lanes on Boteler Street
Added planters and flex stakes on Forsey Street
Expanded other traffic calming measures on King Edward Avenue, including planter boxes, flex stakes, traffic Logix speed board with a cloud that flashes at 51 km/h or more or strobes at 61 km/h or more
Added zebra crossings St-Patrick St and Island Lodge Road
New bus measures (i.e. light signal for service) of the #19 for the Porter Island staff and residents

Social Accomplishments

  • Supporting Strathcona Heights Homework Club (swim passes, wifi, space, etc)
  • Chairing the Town and Gown Committee by bringing together residents, the University, City staff and students
  • Introduced Interim Control By Law to stop bunkhouses
  • Conducted zoning review of R4 zones
  • Supporting the Sandy Hill Somerset Street East depaving project
  • Investing in lobby, exterior furniture and flooring replacement at the Silver Heights Building Improvements (senior building)
  • Focused on heritage protection by introducing two new zones (Heritage Conservation Districts) to protect our built heritage
  • Supporting the Prime Minister’s Row Initiative: program designed to showcase the PM’s who have lived in our community.  One of the initial projects is a mural at Lover’s Lane
  • Building on the success of the Panda Game, Welcome Week Walkabout, Landlord Education Session with measures to protect the quality of life of residents by piloting a solid waste project in Sandy Hill
  • Led the charge for Provincial changes to PayDay Loan Act by lobbying for authority to all municipalities in Ontario to control zoning for those lending type stores
  • Supporting Neighbourhood Watches as part of the Ottawa Police Changes
  • Fundraising at Optimiste Park to ensure low-income youth can swim without a barrier
  • Converting Richelieu Court into family units
  • Bringing the Beechwood Farmer’s Market to Optimiste Park
  • Investing in building improvements at 300 Lacasse (senior’s building) including lobby, elevators, boilers, roof
  • Helped with Affordable food preparation by developing Lowertown Resource Center partnership for community kitchen at Friel residents of Uottawa
  • Responding to community concerns around night time safety and visibility by adding LED lights
  • Invested in balcony repairs at 160 Charlotte Street
  • Invested in building improvements at Bélanger Manor (senior’s residence) including lobby improvements, community room flooring, window replacement
  • Worked to obtain Heritage Designation of MacDonald Gardens Park
  • Invested in 380 Murray with infrastructure improvements to the exterior building, balconies, parking garage and exterior spaces improvements
  • Supported the creation of the EquiPass
  • Supported the Geese Management Project to protect our pathways and parks users
  • Supported new affordable subsidies for Child Care with a  target of no waiting lists
  • Supported 35 new support workers in our City run long term care facilities
