Accomplishments

Over the last twelve years, I have worked hard, to bring positive change in our community

We have seen improvements to public spaces, active transportation and community engagement. Our community has felt the impacts, both big and small, of these efforts. Let’s carry on building this momentum and making sure that Lowertown, Sandy Hill and Vanier thrive and are welcoming neighbourhoods to live, work and play.

Vanier

Worked with the community and local transit advocates to push for the introduction of the Route 15, providing more reliable weekday peak service in connecting Vanier residents with the downtown core.
Establish a vision for the short, medium and long-term for the Byward Market with the Byward Market Public Realm plan that should be approved in early 2021
Connected neighborhood resource centres and Ottawa Community Housing with the Ottawa Mission to provide free, weekly Food Truck meal deliveries
Supported Market Mobile and their expansion into all neighborhoods to give access to affordable and fresh produce

Worked with City Staff, artists, and community members to add public art in the following locations:

o Rideau Station: Genevieve Cadieux “Flots” et Jim Verburg “The shape this takes to get to that”

o uOttawa Station: Ken Emig “Sphere Field” and Derek Besant “Train of Thought.”

o Maple Island: Amy Thompson “Rise.”

Fueled by community feedback, supported the re-introduction of the Ottawa Police Neighbourhood Ressource Teams and better integration with existing City of Ottawa resources and other social services.
Supported and championed the introduction of the City-led Integrated Neighbourhood Service Teams along with the Neighbourhood Ambassador Teams.
Supported additional housing-focused Outreach Services to be provided in the high-needs neighbourhood
Championed the creation of the Unsheltered Task Force, comprised of City Departments and Homeless Service Providers to address and respond to the emerging needs of unsheltered individuals. Housing Services Staff and Outreach Teams from Ottawa Inner City Health, Salvation Army, Odawa and Somerset West Community Health Centre meet regularly to address the needs of the street-living population. Improved Street Lighting fixtures in Lowertown East
Active Partner in the Lowertown Our Home Committee and Lowertown East Residents Committee
Creation of the Multi-Departmental Problematic Address Taskforce in partnership with the community and a variety of City departments
Made improvements to cycling safety by adding cycle zone delineators on Cumberland Street, Stewart Street, and Wilbrod Street
Creation of a Forest protection plan in Richelieu park
Création du Carré de la Francophonie en plein cœur de Vanier. Installation des panneaux de rues pour identifier la Carré de la Francophonie.
New winter trail along Rideau River

Worked with City Staff, artists and community members to add public art in the following locations:

o 347 Montreal Road

o 270 Marier

o Robert E Wilson PS – 373 McArthur Ave

o 196 Beechwood

Revitalization of Riverain Park Phase 1 (new splash pad, adult fitness equipment, off-leash dog area, a new basketball court, a new horseshoe pitch, resurfacing of the tennis courts, new pathway & lighting improvements, and a new drinking fountain
Work with Muséoparc on the reconstruction of the sugar shack
Getting the funding for Optimiste Park – Genest outdoor pool replacement. Modernizing the 57-year-old pool facility will include expanding the pool basin, installing a new pool deck and fencing, and improving underground infrastructure and operating systems.

Worked to advance OCH improvements at:

o 280 Monfort: Safety enhancements, outdoor space improvements, community gardens

o 300 Lacasse: Flooring, elevators

o Richelieu Court: Family unit conversion and upgrades

Starting September 2018, an addition of a new bus route, #20, to increase bus service for Vanier residents
Created a new fund to help remove financial barriers for youth to swim at Optimiste Park
Coordinated 10 different working groups with the community, residents and businesses to oppose the Salvation Army’s model and the location at 333 Montreal Rd
Co-led the Beechwood Complete Street Project
Added additional bulbouts and sidewalks in various areas in Vanier: Cody, Levis, Cyr, Savard, Jeanne-Mance, Ste-Cecile, Jolliet, Lavergne, and Frechette
Co-led the Transit Forum for users who travel from or to locations east of the Rideau River
Installed a new sidewalk on the south side of Vanier Parkway
Introduced traffic calming measures along McArthur Ave (i.e. removing one lane)
Planted 150 trees in Kingsview Park as part of the Maple Groves greening project
Introduced flex stakes on Montgomery Street, Olmstead Street, Landry Street, Montfort Street, Granville Street
Added school pavement markings on Montgomery Street
Closure of Emond Street with planters to protect the residential street
Protecting the heritage and historical aspects of the St-Charles Church building
Engaging at the community leaders table for Ensemble pour Vanier
Addition of new splash pad at St-Ambroise Park.
Supporting Ottawa’s Largest Artist Mural along Montreal Road
Starting the design and planning of the revitalization of Montreal Rd, including identifying community leaders for engagement and decision making
Traffic calming measures (i.e. flex posts) on Marier St, North River Road, Allen Boulevard, Beaudry Street, Landry Street
Added pavement markings, zebra crosswalks, and stop signs on Landry Street
Created school pavement markings on Jeanne Mance Street
Investing in our aging underground infrastructures such as trenchless sewer relining at Montreal Rd (North River Road -Lacasse), Bolton, Garneau, and St Patrick

Social Accomplishments

  • Supporting Strathcona Heights Homework Club (swim passes, wifi, space, etc)
  • Chairing the Town and Gown Committee by bringing together residents, the University, City staff and students
  • Introduced Interim Control By Law to stop bunkhouses
  • Conducted zoning review of R4 zones
  • Supporting the Sandy Hill Somerset Street East depaving project
  • Investing in lobby, exterior furniture and flooring replacement at the Silver Heights Building Improvements (senior building)
  • Focused on heritage protection by introducing two new zones (Heritage Conservation Districts) to protect our built heritage
  • Supporting the Prime Minister’s Row Initiative: program designed to showcase the PM’s who have lived in our community.  One of the initial projects is a mural at Lover’s Lane
  • Building on the success of the Panda Game, Welcome Week Walkabout, Landlord Education Session with measures to protect the quality of life of residents by piloting a solid waste project in Sandy Hill
  • Led the charge for Provincial changes to PayDay Loan Act by lobbying for authority to all municipalities in Ontario to control zoning for those lending type stores
  • Supporting Neighbourhood Watches as part of the Ottawa Police Changes
  • Fundraising at Optimiste Park to ensure low-income youth can swim without a barrier
  • Converting Richelieu Court into family units
  • Bringing the Beechwood Farmer’s Market to Optimiste Park
  • Investing in building improvements at 300 Lacasse (senior’s building) including lobby, elevators, boilers, roof
  • Helped with Affordable food preparation by developing Lowertown Resource Center partnership for community kitchen at Friel residents of Uottawa
  • Responding to community concerns around night time safety and visibility by adding LED lights
  • Invested in balcony repairs at 160 Charlotte Street
  • Invested in building improvements at Bélanger Manor (senior’s residence) including lobby improvements, community room flooring, window replacement
  • Worked to obtain Heritage Designation of MacDonald Gardens Park
  • Invested in 380 Murray with infrastructure improvements to the exterior building, balconies, parking garage and exterior spaces improvements
  • Supported the creation of the EquiPass
  • Supported the Geese Management Project to protect our pathways and parks users
  • Supported new affordable subsidies for Child Care with a  target of no waiting lists
  • Supported 35 new support workers in our City run long term care facilities
