April 24, 2019 – Montreal road working group

On April 24th, 2019, we held our final working group. Special thanks to the members of our working group who took the time to share their thoughts and opinions.

The next steps are the final open house on May 13th and the special edition business open house on May 16. The May 13th edition will be held between 6 and 9 pm at Centre Pauline Charron and is a drop-in format.

We started off the meeting with an update from Public Art Plan staff Melissa Black and Rebecca Carbin. The plan that Rebecca created (after several public consultations) is ambitious and is a good representation of the community. Some goals include gateway features and gathering spaces. The plan will be publicly released at the open house and will also be available online.

The next step for public art will be the call out to artists.

Next Mario gave his update including the exciting news about the hydro pole burial. In case you missed it, the latest news is that we were successful in passing a motion at Council to have the hydro poles buried along the whole corridor of North River Road to De L’Eglise. This is a tremendous accomplishment and will make a world of difference for residents and businesses alike!

The revitalization project will last four years in total with the first and last year being minimally disruptive. The construction preparatory work started the first week of May and utility work (including hydro work) will continue through the spring and summer.

The main construction work (underground sewer and watermain replacement) will begin this fall. One traffic lane in each direction and pedestrian access will remain at all times this year. 2020 and 2021 will be the biggest construction years, followed by the landscaping work to be done in 2022.

Lastly, Sebastien Deguire (from CSW Landscape) gave the landscaping design update.

We’re sticking with the burgundy coloured pavers as a colour highlight. We’re excited that the tree covers (cage like structures designed to protect young trees) will now be replaced by tree guards, which are much smaller and shorter. This will give Montreal Rd a cleaner look.

At the North River Road mini-plaza, the brick walls will be replaced with a lower wall made of lime stone. More trees and benches will be added and possibly additional bollards and a higher curb to further protect pedestrians from traffic. It was suggested that we keep the planting trimmed due to poor sight lines, especially at the south east corner of this intersection.

Mark Ave will have new pedestrian lights and convex mirrors to enhance the safety of the area.

There was a suggestion for more trees in place of seating at the Emond plaza and we discussed using white thermoplast instead of white paint at crosswalks for better durability.

Montreal Road’s time has come and you may see some utility work going on the next time you’re travelling on Montreal Rd. Until next time!
