Forging through COVID: Light, path made for Vanier residents (Perspectives Vanier, March 2021)

As we enter the one-year anniversary of COVID-19 in our community, I am pleased to say that in Vanier, we have overcome many challenges that help us navigate this pandemic.

In the early days, we worked hard to address immediate needs: food security, supporting local businesses, access to local COVID testing sites, and finding ways to stay safe but connected to our community.

Three locations have supported our community with additional pandemic services:

  1. Partage Vanier located at 161 Marier helped navigate food security with pre-packaged hampers, food deliveries and pop-up Ottawa Mission mobile food trucks, which happens each Friday at 2:30 pm.
  2. One of three Respite Centres in Ottawa located at 309 McArthur (Bernard Grandmaître Arena) provides community drop-in services daily.
  3. COVID testing located at 270 Marier (Centre Francophone) offers walk-in testing each Tuesday and Thursday; for all details, visit or by call 613-288-5353.

These important services are available to families, seniors, and individuals during these challenging times.

As there are currently not enough vaccines available to vaccinate all the residents in Ottawa, Vanier has been identified as a priority neighbourhood.

Ottawa Public Health determined who was most at risk to COVID-19 and vaccines are prioritized for communities with the highest risk.

In our community, vaccination clinics are located at:

  • Centre Pauline-Charron
  • St-Laurent Complex
  • Overbrook Community Center
  • Ottawa City Hall

All these vaccination sites are available by appointments only; please book by calling 613-691-5505 (if you live in Vanier or another priority neighbourhood and are over 80 years of age).

Starting March 15, all Ottawa residents aged 80 or older, regardless of where they live in the city, can book an appointment through the Ontario government’s booking system.

The provincial vaccine information line, 1-888-999-6488, is available between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., seven days a week.

Visit for the best source of up-to-date information on eligibility and how to book your appointment.
