Riverain Park ollies up to next phase (Newsletter: Winter 2021)

As the first phase of Riverain Park comes to an end, the City has ramped up consultation and planning for phase 2 of one of our most significant park revitalization projects for Vanier.

We began construction for the modernization of Riverain Park in Fall 2020, with the renewal and upgrade of existing play structure amenities as well as added new features, such as a splash pad, adult fitness equipment, an off-leash dog area, a new basketball court, a new horseshoe pitch and the resurfacing of the tennis courts and the addition of pickleball courts. Pathway and lighting improvements are also part of the project’s first phase.

This work is almost complete, set to reopen this fall. As this work wraps up, I am pleased that we are not slowing down and the second phase of the work is now underway.

Phase 2 of the park project includes constructing a new skateboard park, winterization of a new fieldhouse, a seasonal boarded skating rink and creating permanent access to the Rideau River, a canoe and kayak launch.

A public art installation in the park near Montreal road will also be a part of this work.

These improvements will complete the project transforming the large community park as a stunning outdoor destination in Vanier tying in area amenities including the green spaces along the Rideau River and near by parks such as Strathcona Park.

To ensure what is being constructed reflects the community’s input, the City launched a community consultation in July, including an online survey now completed.

The focus included asking for resident feedback on accent colours for the skatepark and general comments on the concept design for City staff to review and adjust the design plans accordingly.

This concept will be finalized this summer, and construction is expected to begin this fall and be complete in spring 2022.

As for completing phase 1 – I am looking forward to celebrating this accomplishment this fall – stay tuned.
