Ottawa is starting off the year right with a brand new discounted fare for our lower-income transit users. The new EquiFare is a more affordable single-fare option. It comes one year after the unveiling of the EquiPass, the discounted monthly pass. Both fares are meant for residents living below the poverty line who do not qualify for other passes.
The EquiFare is $1.75 per ride. You can qualify for this fare if your income is below $24,600 for a single person, or below $45,712 for a family of four. You must use Presto or ParaPay for this fare; however if you qualify for the fare, the cost of your Presto card will be waived.
Please note that if you already have an EquiPass you are automatically approved for the EquiFare, and you will be required to renew your EquiFare status every two years.
Applications for the EquiPass/EquiFare program can be downloaded at octranspo.com, or picked up in person at OC Transpo’s Customer Service Centres, which can be found at the Rideau Centre, St-Laurent Centre and City Hall.
The EquiFare is a great option for our lower-income residents who use public transit less frequently. You will be hearing more about the EquiFare in the coming months through on-board announcements. If you know of anyone who would benefit from this fare or from the pass please encourage them to apply.
Everyone should be able to travel around our wonderful neighbourhood of Vanier.
