Ottawa Community Housing (OCH) is the largest rental housing provider in Ottawa and the 4th largest public provider in Canada.
As Chair of the OCH Board, I am proud of the work being done to strategically transform OCH operations and ensure its ability to build more affordable rental housing. OCH has developed technical expertise – more particularly green expertise – thanks to the building of the largest passive house in Canada.
Exciting new developments are on the horizon for OCH with several mixed-income, transit-oriented and sustainable new builds across the City. More than 1000 units are being built and designed including in Gladstone Village and Mikinak, and we will soon be turning our attention onto Overbrook.
At 811 Gladstone, in Gladstone Village, we will soon see close to 140 new affordable homes into the neighbourhood.
More recently, OCH completed the redevelopment of Richelieu Court where 30 bachelor units were converted into 15 3-bedroom units, allowing to welcome many new families into the Vanier community. This type of revitalization in communities is needed all across the community, and the City.
In addition to the new homes OCH is building, we continue to focus on the repair and renewal of existing homes. Recently, the Federal Government invested $301 million in partnership with the City and the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation to provide predictability for OCH capital repairs.
With this strategic financing opportunity, OCH has now a sustained access to capital renewal resources and can ensure that the existing social housing stock is maintained in good condition, rehabilitated and retrofitted to be more sustainable and greener. This level of funding will give a boost to OCH social housing portfolio and the hundreds of communities they support.
OCH continues to innovate and is preparing for a recovery phase. We have built the capacity to deliver more than 10,000 homes to support local priorities and are ready to offer newer and greener housing solutions for the next decade.
