Spring has sprung and the city crews are out in full force. In early spring of every year, our hard-working employees switch from winter to their spring/ summer work. Warmer weather maintenance includes such things as street sweeping, pavement markings, park maintenance, tree planting and community clean-ups.
Road and sidewalk sweeping commences in early spring. Generally, this work is done during the day but if you live in a business improvement area (BIA) area you could hear this work overnight. Please be patient with the crews as they clean the girt and litter from the past 3 seasons. Pavement marking begin in the month of May and continue until mid-autumn (depending on the weather).
Spring park maintenance activities usually commence in mid-April. This includes the removal of rink boards and the re-installation of seasonal furniture like benches, picnic tables and waste receptacles. Once the spring park preparation is complete, ongoing park maintenance services will continue throughout the summer season, including grass cutting, sport field maintenance, litter pickup and play structure maintenance and inspection.
Tree planting begins in the last week of April and runs until mid-June. This year we are getting several new trees near the Vanier Parkway/ McArthur intersection. Ongoing tree maintenance activities include removal of dead or unsafe trees, stump removal, tree pruning, assessing storm damage, as well as insect and disease control.
Our community clean-up program called the GLAD Cleaning the Capital campaign is accepting new registrants until May 15th. If you’re interested in organizing your own community clean-up please visit www.ottawa.ca/clean, and invite our office if you’re looking for extra help.
If you’d like to make a service request for any of the above services, please call 311 or visit ottawa.ca. If you run into issues you can contact us for further assistance. We’re looking forward to another great summer.
